Copper Soldering Tip Cleaner — Bare Ball, Lidded Tin or Weighted Stand

A coiled copper wire ball for wiping solder off an iron tip. You jab the tip into it a couple of times and carry on – no water, no sponge, no waiting.

• Dry cleaning. A damp sponge pulls heat out of the tip every time you wipe it; a copper ball does not, so the iron is ready to work the moment you come back to the joint.
• Soft copper wire, which is the point – it scrapes off solder and flux residue without the abrasion of steel wool or a file.
• Three versions, and the photograph on each shows which: the ball on its own, the ball in a lidded metal tin, or the ball in a heavy black stand that sits on the bench and will not skate away when you stab at it.
• Nothing to set up or plug in – it works with any soldering iron, on any bench, straight out of the packet.
• The lid matters if you move around. The tin version closes, which keeps the swarf and old solder inside it rather than in your toolbox.

Choosing and using it. If you already have somewhere to put it, the bare ball is all you need. The tin suits anyone who packs their kit away or works in more than one place; the weighted stand is the one for a fixed bench, where you want to clean the tip one-handed. A word on the tin: it is thin metal, and the supplier says it can pick up a dent in transit – it closes and works regardless, but it is worth knowing before you open the parcel. The supplier does not publish dimensions for any of the three, so judge the proportions from the photographs. Old solder collects in the bottom over time; tip the ball out and shake it clear now and then rather than letting it pack solid.
